The orchestral catalyst
The MoBa Barrel produces an unmistakable, full-bodied, dark sound that makes it a favourite amongst orchestral players worldwide. With increased resistance and focus, and an unbelievable ease of articulation throughout the entire range of the clarinet, this barrel is a great option for artists wanting a darker tone. Artists prefer this barrel for orchestral repertoire, whether playing in the section or as a featured soloist.
Specs: Grenadilla or cocobolo wood. Compatible with Bb and A clarinets.
Fit
Most instruments use Standard fit. Standard Plus is the same fit with a larger bore that's more free blowing. Many (but not all) Selmer Paris instruments use Selmer Paris fit.
Length
Most clarinets use a 66 or 65 mm barrel, but this varies by manufacturer. If you're happy with the tuning you'll want to order the same size as listed on your current barrel.
Wood
Cocobolo is red in appearance and offers a dark, full-bodied tone. Grenadilla is brown or black and offers a more focused sound with increased ping and projection.

The barrel I purchased was the MoBa 67mm and made of cocobolo. My clarinets are both Buffet R13's. I found that the MoBa barrel has an exceptional ability to even the tone between registers, as noted in other reviews. The cocobolo I found sweetens/lightens my timbre compared to the grenadilla, great for exposed orchestral moments. The MoBa in particular has granted me an advantage in sounding closer to a vocalist, which in my mind is what we are always attempting to do. It is an organic, free timbre that is perfect for what I'm looking for out of my playing. Especially good for Mozart, delicate and whimsical!
I purchased the MoBa barrel in Grenadilla with a length of 67.5mm. I chose a longer barrel because I usually play on a 67, but still have to pull out at the barrel and middle joint. The MoBa barrel improves my intonation and provides an evenness of tone quality across the entire instrument. I haven't played it yet with my orchestra (due to covid circumstances) but I can already tell that my projection will be much improved. I think I sound louder just in my house. In addition, the barrel is also beautiful and looks really cool.
This barrel has truly changed the game for my clarinet performance. The rich, unique and dark sound is focused and sounds great on all registers. It was the gateway to me finding my own true sound concept. The sound it produces on my A is especially beautiful!
The Moba barrel really opened up my sound and gave me a degree of flexibility and stability in tone quality that I never had with my stock professional barrel.
I purchased both the MoBa barrel and bell to liven-up my 1970’s R13 (Vandoren M30 mouthpiece). I was skeptical about how much difference I could attain but truly surprised; articulation was freer and responsive, my tone maintained richness and best of all, when I pushed most forte it opened up without spreading or edginess! This cocobolo combo, for me, blossomed with fullness in greater projection. Trusted listeners gave this feedback.
Very well balanced, sound is round and focus.
